DevDrop

Developer-aware workspace synchronization across machines and servers, including file synchronization, conflict management, encryption options, and self-hosted deployment.

Developers rarely work on just one machine. A laptop, a desktop, a build server and increasingly AI agents all need the same workspace — but general file-sync tools don't understand code: they copy node_modules, fight with git, leak .env files and silently overwrite work.

DevDrop is a sync service built specifically for developer workspaces. It understands git repositories, work in progress, ignore rules, generated dependency folders and agent worktrees, and treats conflicts non-destructively by keeping both versions. Content-defined chunking means only the changed parts of a file travel over the network, and every chunk is integrity-checked end to end.

It runs as a single Go binary that acts as server, daemon and CLI, with a React dashboard and a native macOS menu-bar app. Teams can self-host it as a hub, or use one machine as an "anchor" for the others, keeping their code on infrastructure they control.

Key features

  • Chunked delta sync using content-defined chunking (FastCDC), so a small edit to a large file re-uploads only the changed chunk
  • End-to-end integrity: content-addressed blobs; the server rejects mismatched hashes and the daemon verifies chunks and whole files before an atomic write
  • Developer-aware rules: git state, .devdropignore, WIP handling, .env materialization and per-pattern encryption (AES-256-GCM)
  • Non-destructive conflicts: both versions are kept and conflict files materialized
  • Hardening options: TLS, login rate limiting, WebSocket origin allowlist, graceful shutdown and a non-root container

Architecture

Machines run a local daemon that watches the workspace and syncs chunks to the server over REST and WebSocket. The server stores content-addressed blobs plus a manifest database. Reusable packages cover chunking, the sync/diff/conflict engine, ignore matching, cross-OS filename safety and encryption.
